Moggerhanger Vikings

Join us at Moggerhanger Park on either Saturday 24 September or Sunday 25 September 2022 from 10am till 5pm.

Bedford or Bedanforda as it was known in the 10th century, was right in the heart of the Danelaw. It was a key strategic location for the Saxons and the Danes, being right on the Ouse and able to control ships up and down the river.  A Burgh with defensive positions existed there to control the area and it changed hands between Saxon as and Vikings several times till the early 11th century.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 917 “The Danes went until they reached Bedanford and the men who were there came out against them and fought them, and put them, to flight, killing a good many”

The year is 917 and the Danes (Vikings) have just been defeated at Bedford. They have retreated a few miles away to the site of what is now Moggerhanger Park , set up camp and are discussing their next move.

Whilst this is happening, a Fyrd of Saxon warriors from Bedford find the camp and our warriors will create a scenario of a fight to the death. Who will win the Saxons of Bedford or the Viking invaders?

Entertainment for the day will include:

  • Combat/weapons displays: The above scenario plus weapons displays will take place twice each day for approx. 30 mins a time.

  • Living history encampment: This will include cooking of period food, tents with displays of weapons, daily living and crafts such as tablet weaving, sewing and leather working.

  • A Skalds Saga: We will have our group Skald tell a story from the Norse sagas for children and parents each day. This will be 1 or 2 times per day at approx. 15 mins per time.

  • Roleplaying: The Vikings are planning their next move, interrogating the public as to the whereabouts of Saxons and at the last part of the day, a full-on Viking wedding will take place.

Tickets £15 Adult, £6.50 Children each day
